Objective

Life without software? Unimaginable.

Whether privately or professionally - there is no area of human life that we can really imagine in our age without digital progress. Software already determines our daily lives and will influence even more areas in the future than we can even imagine today.

Our technical progress constantly generates new fields of application for informational knowledge, for which software has to be developed, adapted and updated. Wherever information accumulates, is stored, organized and evaluated, information technology plays a key role. Energy management, autonomous driving and the ever-new offerings on the Internet are just a few examples. Added to this are technologies such as blockchain, which is revolutionizing the way data is stored.

With all these examples, one thing is clear: The need for IT staff, especially and specifically in software development, is growing rapidly.

Career prospects

Boundless opportunities with the greatest security in every industry.

Digital associations already estimate that nearly 100,000 jobs for IT experts are unfilled because there are not enough skilled workers. Software developers are among the most sought-after. According to calculations by McKinsey experts, Germany will need almost 800,000 additional IT specialists by 2026.

Communications, transportation and tourism, healthcare, banking and insurance, industry and agriculture, media and entertainment - even sports are hardly conceivable today without IT applications. This ensures constant variety in the professional lives of Mittweida graduates, who combine creativity in problem solving with the application of formal techniques and methods. They work for example as

  • Software developers or engineers,
  • Problem analysts,
  • Scrum masters in agile software development,
  • Web developers,
  • system and application programmers.

Even as an entry-level salary, computer scientists with a university degree receive an average of almost 50,000 euros per year. Those who add a master's degree after their bachelor's degree can expect even more. At Mittweida University of Applied Sciences, two suitable courses are available: Blockchain and Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLT) and Cybercrime/Cybersecurity

Structure

Software development is much more than "just" programming.

In Applied Computer Science we design programs in such a way that they can be optimally useful to the end user. This is directly reflected in our degree program in software development. At Mittweida you will deal with all aspects, from analyzing needs and requirements to design, testing, documentation, and marketing.

After a solid introduction to computer science with the basics of computer and operating systems as well as networks and IT security, software development and programming are the focus of your studies. The computer science knowledge is supplemented with project management as well as legal and economic basics.

Because software development is much more than just programming, you do not have to be able to program at the beginning of your studies. That's exactly what the bachelor's degree program is for, where you can work with Java, C++ and C#. You will not only learn theoretically, but through constant practice. You will also work on your own programming projects in teams.

You set the focus of your software development studies yourself through the elective modules. This specialization allows you to target niches in the job market where there is hardly any competition.

The Bachelor's programme starts in the winter semester (from October). To have a chance of getting a place, you must apply in good time. You can find all information about the application deadlines here. The programme is admission-restricted because we have more applicants than places. Therefore, a selection process takes place to find the most suitable applicants.

Register at hs-mittweida.de/bewerben. As soon as you have submitted all forms and supporting documents, you will take part in the selection process for the degree programme. If you get a place, you can enrol online.

You can begin your studies in Mittweida if you have

  • the general higher education entrance qualification or
  • a subject-related higher education entrance qualification (for the relevant subject area) or
  • the entrance qualification for a university of applied sciences.

All information about application deadlines and the required documents can be found here.

If you do not have any of the mentioned degrees, look here for more information.

There is a separate application deadline for international students. Please click here for more information.

A previous internship is not required. You should have basic knowledge in using a PC (incl. current operating system). Programming skills are useful, but not absolutely necessary. In addition, a good knowledge of mathematics and English is advantageous.
