Objective

Improve life with lab work!

The climate crisis and endangered biodiversity are triggering a rethink in society. New techniques are needed to ensure the relief of the biosphere. Biotechnology is needed for this: it uses the knowledge of enzymes, cells and organisms to create new technical applications or to make old processes more ecological.

With the bachelor's degree program in Mittweida, you will learn how to optimize biological, chemical and physical processes in the laboratory in order to produce everyday products in a more environmentally friendly way through new processes, to develop new diagnostic methods and to better treat diseases.

In doing so, you will combine knowledge from biology and technology and help to make more of nature's processes usable for the economy and society in the future.

Career prospects

An industry of the future with almost endless possibilities.

In Germany alone, there are more than 700 companies active in biotechnology - with a strong upward trend. After all, biotech companies have been booming not just since the successful application of mRNA vaccines.

Whether it's medicines, food, agriculture, cosmetics or detergents - no industry can do without biotechnologists. They use knowledge from microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, bioinformatics and process engineering to improve people's lives. Even the drinking water supply in Africa can be improved through biotechnology. Accordingly, your career prospects are diverse, for example as:

  • Researcher in public or private institutions,
  • Laboratory manager the field of diagnostics, genetic and environmental technology or sensor technology
  • Scientist:in the pharmaceutical, cosmetics, chemical or food industry,
  • Project manager:in environmental protection

With Genomic Biotechnology at Mittweida University of Applied Sciences, you will also find the right master's program to deepen your knowledge after your bachelor's degree.

Structure

Lab coat and test tube? You'll never need that with us.

The biotechnology program at Mittweida University of Applied Sciences combines knowledge from biology, chemistry and technology. To do this, you will first deepen your basic scientific knowledge and learn to understand and use biological data. Don't worry: You can take a preparatory course in chemistry before starting your studies, and in the basic modules, knowledge from school is repeated and your knowledge is polished up before you specialize in your desired topic from the third semester:

Molecular Diagnostics delves into methods for detecting biochemical and genetic markers. They are used, for example, to identify diseases or to classify cancer, but they also play an important role in the development of active medical ingredients and in modern breeding research.

Environmental biotechnology focuses on the use of biotechnological processes and methods to address current problems in the areas of air, water, soil, energy and waste.

With various elective modules, you'll explore content from the other major or other courses of study. As you learn to modify genetic material, ethics will also play a role for you. You will also learn the basic methods of data analysis and presentation.

Even before your internship and bachelor thesis in the last semester, you will gain lasting practical experience: In our laboratories, pipetting and analysis is carried out in small groups of no more than four people.
